USAAF - 11th Air Force Attu Island 1944
Sightseeing
There was not much to do on Attu. There was a civillian population before the war as shown by the church above. Otherwise there was salmon fishing, and souvenier hunting battle sites.
Fuel dump and US Army cemetery.
Looks like someone found a live mortar round. There is another picture, that I cannot find, of a human skull on display on the base somewhere.
The Aleutian Islands are a hostile environment. There is only tundra with permafrost. This was a fake tree.
A pre-war monument of some sort. Some of the pre-war population were Russian and perhaps Russian Orthodox.
Japanese aircraft wreckage.
Japanese aircraft engine.
Sign reads "Holtz - Massacre Pass Holtz Bay - Massacre Pass was the initial objective of the American Troops attacking from the south. Here the Japanese resistance was greater than anticipated. Some of the bitterest fighting of the campaign developed before the Nipponese were defeated and withdrew to the Chicagof Harbor Area."
Pre-war church.
Serial scene.
Leaving the base.
Japanese anti-aircraft gun?
