USAAF - 11th Air Force Attu Island 1944
Aircraft
These are the some of planes on the island during this time. The subject of most of the pictures is the Martin AT-23B/TB-26C which was a variant of the Martin B-26C Marauder medium bomber. This particular aircraft (Serial Number 41-35436) survived the war to be "condemned salvage obsolete Nov 3, 1945".
More details on this model of aircraft can be found at: http://www.joebaugher.com//usaf_bombers/b26_7.html.
TSGT Bruno Kozlowski at the tail of Martin AT-23B/TB-26C Marauder Serial Number 41-35436. These were a variant of the Martin B-26 Marauder. Notice the tie down. On the AT-23B the guns were removed and the openings were sheeted over with aluminum. They were outfitted with equipment for deploying and towing targets to give fighter aircraft high altitude gunnery practice. The bomb bays had gas tanks installed to extend their range. Go to linkA flight record for this period. Men got a bump in pay for flying so it was important to log the necessary hours. Names on this page: TSgt Bruno Kozlowski, Lt Saxton, Lt Alden, Lt Beasley, Lt Ballard, Lt J. Hunter Lt Boyce, Capt Hed

Martin AT-23B/TB-26C Marauder flying formation. The prank to pull on the "new"guy was to tell him that the plane was leaking some fluid and to check if it was fuel. The new guy would somehow stick his hand outside, I am guessing the rear lower side doors, and get it wet to see. Meanwhile someone would be urinating out the tube in the front of the plane.

I think this maybe the winch that was used to tow targets. Notice on this model of the Marauder the tail gun opening is sheeted over. The bomb bay doors are open. I know they would have extra fuel tanks in the bomb bay for long flights. I was told the rolled up target would be deployed rolled up through a tube then dropped over the field before landing.

I believe this is a Navy PV-1 Ventura bomber. These flew from Attu to bomb the Japanese Kurile Islands. A good book on this subject is "The Last Flight of Bomber 31: Harrowing Tales of American and Japanese Pilots Who Fought In World War II's Arctic" by Ralph Wetterhahn.
